This post appeared in the Facebook Page for “It Can’t Be You” but not everyone who reaches here necessarily follows that Page, right? This is about an interesting conversation I had with an old friend recently. I was asked ” How come you chose a military kind of background for your book? You weren’t in the Army were you?”. No, I wasn’t- though many seeing me and my mugshot often conclude I was!
My interest in the Indian Army in particular stems from reading John Masters– one of my favourite authors. He wrote of the British Indian Army as it was then called. In my opinion, Jack Masters (1914-1983) was one of the best writers about India, especially of those times. I thoroughly enjoyed all his books.
It is not surprising therefore that the main character in my book, Colonel Belliappa is from a Gorkha Regiment!
