National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo for short was not new to me. I had come across it some years ago but couldn’t find( or should I more accurately say “make” ) time to take part in it. Very simply, people attempt to write at least 50,000 words of a novel in the month of November each year.

I got an opportunity in 2009 and grabbed it with both hands. Over 170,000 people took part from different parts of the world. I completed NaNoWriMo writing about 50127 words in November 2009. It’s important that you can’t use stuff you have written before. You should start writing only when it becomes November 1 in whichever part of the world you are in. Your aim: to complete 50,000 words by the end of November. There is no entry fee.

My novel ” It Can’t Be You” a mystery with elements of historical fiction and family drama owes its start to NaNoWriMo 2009. I recall that about 30,000 people finally successfully completed NaNoWriMo in 2009.

I find the NaNoWriMo website quite fascinating. You will find a link in the blogroll at the bottom of this page. I have gained a lot from interacting with fellow participants in the many forums there. Many, like me, are working towards developing their NaNoWriMo effort to becoming a full fledged novel. I have finished about 72,000 words and my novel is ready!

If you are keen on writing, please block off time in November to take part in NaNoWriMo. You will not regret your decision.
