Writing Tips

I am always on the look out for tips to improve my writing. Thanks to Elizabeth Craig’s tweet, I was pointed to “Practical Tips On Writing From 22 Brilliant Authors”. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I did.

It did strike me that there are no standard rules on such things. What works for you may not work for the next person. You are not obliged to follow everything that you read, however well- meaning they may be. Look at your own circumstances, your own priorities and chalk out your own writing tips.

Based on my experience, here are a few key ones:

• Don’t mix writing with editing. There is a time for each of them. When you are writing, write. When you are editing, edit. Don’t mix the two.
• Use spontaneity because you are at your best when things are spontaneous. Sure, you may change somethings downstream but I have found that my best writing comes when it is spontaneous.
• Writing style, grammar, vocabulary are all important but not as important as the story you have to tell. Spend a lot of time in developing your plot, especially the characters in your story. They will be remembered long after your grammar.
